Writer: Nicole NgNicole Ng

"I value the personal connections built through supporting local businesses"

In celebration of Black History Month, we are taking a deeper dive into the stories of remarkable individuals and business that have made an impact on their communities. Throughout this month, we have the privilege of connecting these trailblazers to explore their journey behind their success and recognition. For this blog post, we are excited to share our first story with Jazmin Whitmore, a testament of diligence and kindness.

Jazmin Whitmore was born and raised in Michigan. She moved to Greensboro, North Carolina in 2004 and moved to Asheville, North Carolina in December 2012. Today, Jazmin is a proud owner of a Consignment store known as the More To Love, Plus Size Consignment Store, a business that is celebrating their 6th anniversary this year! Throughout her life, Jazmin had always been through change, constantly moving and adapting to new environments. Her ability to self-teach played a significant role in both her growth and her success in her business.

Jazmin quickly found her sense of belonging at Asheville, drawn to both beauty of the mountains and the warmth of a welcoming community. But it wasn't just the landscape that inspired her, it was her eye-opening shopping spree through downtown Asheville that truly set her wheel in motion. Her experience was unpleasant as Jazmin recalled being frustrated only to find one shop that had clothes with plus-sizes. That moment catalyst for her business idea sparked her business idea, that led to the More To Love, Consignment Store. It was a personal experience that turned into a mission to fill a gap she saw in the community.

More To Love - Plus Size Consignment Store is dedicated to provide all available sizes of clothes and shoes, ensuring that everyone can find something that fits them and feel comfortable to wear. For Jazmin, it's all about empowerment. She believes that how you feel and how you express yourself matters the most because your clothes are an expression for yourself. With this in mind, Jazmin's mission is to create a space to fulfill the needs for the community to provide an affordable and a pleasant shopping experience that caters the diversity needs of the community.

Jazmin's business had truly been a vibrant and thriving spot for the community. recently, she was honored with the Unsung Hero Award, a recognition of her hard work and recognition. Jazmin has been grateful for the way that the community embraces both her and her business. The support of her clients has been great, and she continues to be inspired by the local customers who stand by her and her mission.

"I am happy that everyday I can wake up and have my family around me and have people who embrace who I am". - Jazmin Whitmore

Like many businesses, there are times where things can be difficult. The COVID-19 pandemic was one of the first major hurdles, as the lockdown forced businesses to adapt quickly. Financial assistance was hard to come by but Jazmin and her husband saw it as a learning opportunity for the business. In response, they began sowing and selling masks that met the WHO guidelines to help the community.

Then comes Hurricane Helene struck, devastating many businesses in the Asheville area. While the storm took its toll on the community, a Jazmin's business were able to bounce back. In the process, she was able to lend a hand to other non-profits, further solidifying her commitment to support the people around her.

Jazmin is deeply committed to providing and giving back to the community, a value that has been in her heart since she started More To Love, Consignment Store. For her, the business has always been more than selling clothes, but also building connections with the community. She believes that her actions and presence has helped the community make a positive impact, helping to strengthen the bonds with everyone together. She also sees that being a part of the community as an opportunity to grow for her business and support other local businesses while fostering a spirit of collaboration and growth.

A key takeaway from Jazmin's journey is that the ultimate goal is happiness. While the road may be tough at times, she believes that embracing and learning to enjoy the process is helpful to get you through overcoming your challenges. Jazmin also values making a dream into a reality. Her dream of opening a plus-size consignment store helps remove barriers by giving people the dream of having comfortable clothes to wear.
